
Advancing Equity in Pediatric Healthcare & Social Services for Black Families in South Los Angeles
Activity Description
This course examines historical and systemic factors that have contributed to medical and social mistrust, with a focus on South Los Angeles. Participants will learn strategies to provide culturally responsive care, enhance communication with caregivers of children aged 0–5, and implement equity-driven practices that improve access and quality of services. Through evidence-based approaches, trauma-informed care, and continuous self-reflection, learners will strengthen their ability to advocate for policies and practices that advance equity and build lasting trust with Black families.
Target Audience
Learning Objectives
- Identify historical and systemic factors contributing to medical and social mistrust within Black communities, with a focus on the communities of South Los Angeles
- Develop skills to engage with Black patients and clients engaging parents relevant to 0-5 population using culturally affirming language, active listening, and trauma-informed care approaches to foster meaningful connections
- Apply evidence-based approaches for integrating cultural humility, shared decision-making, and community-based interventions to improve service accessibility and quality for caregivers with children aged 0-5 years
- Establish a personal and organizational commitment to ongoing learning, critical self-reflection on biases, and advocacy for policies that advance equity in healthcare and social services for Black pediatric populations within the South Los Angeles community
