Overview of Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care

Activity Description

According to the National Institutes of Health, many Americans die in facilities such as hospitals or nursing homes receiving care that is not consistent with their wishes (NIH, 2021). Many patients have unmet palliative care needs and there is a growing need for palliative care (Chuang et al, 2017). Research cites that specialty palliative care workforce is inadequate to address the needs of the US population and therefore need to introduce advanced care planning and palliative care earlier in the disease process (Chuange et al, 2017). This course provides an overview of palliative medicine and hospice care, including the roles and responsibilities of the healthcare team to support patients and their families access palliative care. The benefits of palliative care, including disparities in access and use of palliative care to support patient care and quality of life will be evaluated.
