TEMPLATE - TEST Virtual Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Centene is providing a no-cost Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Training for contracted, in-network providers. This training will be held virtually on Thursday, Jan 22 and Friday, Jan 23, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time each day (Please adjust your time-zone).

Description 

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma that includes participation by their parents or caregivers. Research shows that TF-CBT successfully resolves a broad array of emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with single, multiple, and complex trauma experiences.

Please carefully review the Who May Attend and Pre-requisites requirements information before registering. If you meet criteria and can commit to the pre-training requirements, please register as soon as possible to secure a spot.

Who May Attend

Only clinicians who meet all of the following criteria are eligible to attend:

  • Contracted in-network provider with Centene or in the credentialing process.
  • Master's degree or above in a mental health discipline.
  • Professional licensure in home state (or under supervision for licensure).
  • Actively treating children/adolescents in your state's foster care/child welfare system. (You do not have to have a foster child on your current caseload, but you need to regularly have the potential of treating a child in foster care.
  • Can commit to and participate in the follow-up TF-CBT Consultation Call Program consisting of twice-monthly, one-hour group conference calls for six months.

Pre-requisites Due no later than end-of-business Friday, January 9, 2026

You must complete the Medical University of South Carolina’s online TF-CBTWeb 2.0 training available for 11 hours of CE credit (in addition to the 14 hours of CE credit available for this training) at https://tfcbt2.musc.edu. This training costs $35. You are required to email your certificate of completion to [email protected]. Other clinicians have reported that it took them 9-11 hours to complete the training, so we encourage you to start early with the TF-CBTWeb training. Please note that emailing an older certificate is fine. You do not need to take the training again.

You must also complete the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS) which is a training that is embedded this course and is available upon registration.  

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will identify and discuss the rationale and benefits of the use of this trauma-specific treatment intervention for children and families experiencing post-traumatic stress and other emotional / behavioral impacts of significant adverse events.
  • Participants will have an opportunity to review, appraise and discuss the outcome evidence supporting the efficacy of TF-CBT.
  • Participants will identify and summarize, via the use of case studies and examples, how to implement the components of P.P.R.A.C.T.I.C.E.; the phase-oriented approach and the efficacy of this model for treating trauma and traumatic grief.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate the process and approach of completing the Trauma Narrative with a practice case.
  • Participants will observe and practice strategies for intervening with both children and their parents or caregivers through training demonstrations and role-plays.
  • Participants will be able to verbalize and list the steps needed to develop improved fidelity adherence through ongoing post-training consultation, and the process leading to TF-CBT certification by model developers.

Roy Van Tassell, MS, LPC-S, Director, Trauma and Evidence-Based Interventions for Centene Corporation

 

Roy Van Tassell, MS, LPC-S, is Director of Trauma and Evidence-Based Interventions for Centene, providing training in trauma, assessment, evidenced-based interventions and consultation to treatment providers and the community. He has been a member of the federally funded National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) since 2002, and co-chairs the NCTSN’s subcommittee for Children with Problematic Sexual Behaviors.

His professional background of over 40 years is diverse, having worked with children to seniors in residential, inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospital settings. Mr. Van Tassell has trained nationally in over 26 states and is an approved master trainer/consultant in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Roy was in the first train-the-trainer cohort with the TF-CBT model developers and served as faculty for nine national and state Learning Collaborative trainings for TF-CBT; including for the National Child Advocacy Center in Huntsville Alabama, the University of Tennessee’s Center of Excellence and as a trainer/consultant for the national Effective Provider, Train-the-Trainer program for the American Psychological Association.

Roy is an approved National Trainer for the advanced topic: TF-CBT for Problem Sexual Behaviors in Children; as well as for Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT), an evidence-informed model for secondary traumatic stress; and an approved trainer for the Child Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE), a non-clinical approach for improving interactions between any adult and child. Since 2005 he has been part of the Oklahoma Dept. of Mental Health’s statewide training and dissemination of the TF-CBT model.

Roy has co-authored a chapter: Beyond Self-Care: Understanding and Mitigating Secondary Trauma in Child Service Systems. In Child and Family Serving Systems: A Compendium of Policy and Practice. for the Child Welfare League of America, as well as An Overview of the Special Issue on Child Trauma, for the Juvenile and Family Court Journal [Maze, Van Tassell, Marsh and Fransein; 09/2008; 59(4):3-5]

Additionally, Roy has provided a variety of advanced trainings in TF-CBT and other trauma-informed care topics with each of the TF-CBT model developers: Drs. Judith Cohen, Anthony Mannarino, and Esther Deblinger. Roy manages his stress by using his CE-CERT skills, spending time with family and granddaughter, being an avid cyclist, and enjoying a great coffee.
