The Stages of Change Model: Implications for Behavioral Health

This course is designed to create a thorough understanding of the stages of change model from a clinical perspective. Clinicians will learn how to assess for what stage a member is in through use of a tool and/or identification of characteristics exhibited by members. Specific attention is paid to matching the clinical intervention based on the member’s reported readiness to change. Clinicians will also gain insight into the critical role of relapse in the change process.

Target Audience

Licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the evolution of the model and current implications for use.
  • Discuss characteristics of a member that indicate which of the five stages of change they may be in.
  • Identify two process of change interventions to support members through the stages of change.
  • Explain the role of relapse as it relates to five stage model.
  • Describe one tool to use to assess for member readiness to change.
  • Apply learning through case scenario activity.
