DSM-5-TR: An Overview of Changes

This course offers an introductory look at DSM-5-TR, including the evolution of the manual, the use of subtypes, specifiers, severities, clinical assessment tools and an overview of changes between DSM-5 and DSM-5-TR.

Target Audience

Licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss one reason why knowledge of the evolution of the DSM is important.
  • Name one benefit of using specifiers, sub types and severity levels. 
  • Discuss 2 reasons for language change in the DSM-5-TR.
  • Identify one benefit from ICD and DSM synchronicity.
  • Identify two cultural considerations in the application of the DSM-5-TR criteria.
  • Identify where a person can find updates to the DSM in real time.
