Helping Your Child/Adolescent Manage Trauma Triggers

May 21, 2026

The purpose of this training is to equip Child Welfare professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify trauma triggers in children who have experienced trauma. Participants will learn to recognize the impact of these triggers on a child’s emotional regulation, daily functioning (e.g., coping with emotions, managing school demands), and overall well-being. The training will focus on strategies to help children cope with trauma triggers, regulate their emotions, and reorient to a sense of safety. Learners will gain an understanding of how trauma affects the five senses and the significance of trauma anniversaries. The session will also cover practical techniques for managing trauma-related distress, including the Stop-Orient-Seek Help (S.O.S.) method, the Window of Tolerance, and thought-stopping exercises. Additionally, participants will explore effective do's and don'ts for supporting children in distress and review tools that foster emotional resilience. Finally, the training will address the relationship between trauma triggers and trauma reminders, providing an overview of how they influence a child's experience.
