Providing Services to the LGBTQIA2S+ Community

This training on culturally competent care and the LGBTQIA+ community is an overview training. The training advances and enhances the attendee’s knowledge on the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility. It encourages participants to explore knowledge of and improve care provided to the LBGTQIA2S+ community. The training reviews key terms, common biases, cultural considerations, statistics, social determinants of health, power imbalances, health disparities, gender affirming care, and ways to improve the care our members receive.

Target Audience

Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the difference between cultural competency, cultural humility, and different types of biases.
  • Implement LGBTQIA2S+ terminology into practice.
  • State three LGBTQIA2S+ related health disparities.
  • Identify three ways organizations can improve their culture.
  • State two components of “special health” considerations such as gender-affirming care and HIV prevention.
