Conversations About Substance Use Disorders

To enhance staff awareness regarding substance use and substance use disorders as they might be encountered in conversations members. Then, to further arrange these conversations using appropriate verbiage and an awareness of referral processes to get members the help they may need regarding substance use disorders. This training will cover a summary of the NSDUH 2020 and in particular those data regarding opioid use, cannabis use, and alcohol use disorders.

Target Audience

Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Become familiar with SAMHSA’s 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health report. 
  • Use survey data to update awareness when working with Members specific to Alcohol, Opioid, and Cannibis Use D/O.
  • Recall a general understanding of HALO/SBIRT and how members can benefit. 
  • Adopt verbiage identified as being a best practice for having a conversation about SUD with a member.
