Suicide & Youth: Overview of Risk and Protective Factors

This is an in-person instructor-led training for The Rock Faith Center.

The purpose of this training is to increase awareness of suicide in youth. Learners will recognize how the unique experiences of youth contribute to the complex factors that make adolescence a critical focus in suicide prevention. The training will offer practical strategies for discussing suicide clearly and sensitively, thus aiding in early detection, prevention, and treatment of at-risk youth. Attendees will recognize the critical need for enveloping cultural awareness and other community factors when addressing the youth in their environments.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain why addressing suicide in youth is important.
  • Identify six examples of risk factors in youth.
  • Detect three warning signs of suicidal ideation via a case scenario.
  • Explain five important considerations when working with individuals who are expressing suicidality.
  • Given a case scenario, recommend one evaluation strategy and available treatment option.
