De-escalation Techniques

Providers learn the causes of aggression, types of aggression, ways to assess the level of escalation, and techniques to de-escalate emotionally agitated individuals.

Target Audience

Foster Care and Child Welfare professionals and stakeholders. Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Foster Parents, Kinship Parents, and Caregivers.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Define anger, aggression, and de-escalation.
  • Discuss the various causes of aggression.
  • Identify the 4 behavior levels.
  • Learn the appropriate staff response for each behavior level.
