Empathy and Advocacy for LGBTQIA+2S Youth and Families

The purpose of this training is to educate learners on sensitive assessment strategies. Learners will come to appreciate the role of cultural competence and cultural humility and how both inform interaction with members of this community. Safety concerns for this community, the effects of minority stress on identity development, and the role of family acceptance and family rejection will be presented. Additionally, information will be provided about gender affirming care and some specific healthcare needs of the community. Also, The new DCFS Procedure 302, Appendix K will be reviewed.

Target Audience

Foster Care and Child Welfare professionals and stakeholders. Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility work together to create cultural responsiveness, sensitivity and respect.
  • Identify three types of safety necessary for healthy identity development.
  • Describe how stigma and environmental stress impacts LGBTQIA+2S health disparities and identity development.
  • Evaluate the impact of family acceptance and family rejection on youth in this community.
  • State three components of the Illinois DCFS Procedure 302, Appendix K.
  • Identify two components of gender-affirming care.
  • Describe one way to prevent Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmission.
