Important: This site is used only for registration. After you register, all pre and post course activities are completed in the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Connect system once your instructor enrolls you.

Description:

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a skills-based training that teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors and health and human services workers and any other adult how to identify, understand and respond to an adolescent (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.

Please review the following prior to registering:

Disclaimer: A minimum of 5 participants is required for the course to run. If this minimum is not met, the trainer will contact registrants regarding future offerings. Please note that if the minimum number of learners eligible to attend is not reached by 2 days in advance of the training, the training will be cancelled, and you will be offered an alternative time and date to take the course. Your course could be cancelled as early as 2 business days prior to the session, or on rare occasions, on the date of the training if the minimum participation is not met.

  • Registration is completed on this site; all pre and post-work occurs in MHFA Connect.
  • 2 hours of required self‑paced pre-work must be completed in MHFA Connect to attend the live, instructor-led training.
  • Enrollment for this course will close 2 weeks prior to the scheduled start date/time to allow time for completion of the pre-work.
  • The 6-hour instructor-led training is held via Zoom and the link will be sent directly to you from your instructor once your pre-work is complete.
  • Participants must:
    • Join the Zoom session individually (not as a group).
    • Attend the entire session.
    • Remain on camera to receive credit.

Target Audience

Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is designed for anyone 18 or older who wants to learn how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges, this includes but is not limited to healthcare workers, first responders, and educators.

Practice Level: Beginner.  

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize signs and symptoms in young people.
  • Use the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE). 
  • Interact with a young person in crisis.
  • Connect a young person with professional help.
  • Address stigma and explain that recovery is possible.
  • Encourage young people to practice self-care.
