An Overview of Trauma-Informed Care When Working With Older Adults

The purpose of this training is to provide a brief overview of trauma and its impact among older adults. Providers will gain a better understanding of trauma, the effects of trauma among older adults, the importance of using a trauma-informed, person-centered approach in treatment and care planning, and strategies to support providers in developing a more trauma-informed approach to care.

Target Audience

Unlicensed and licensed LTSS professionals and stakeholders including, but not limited to, direct care workers, administrators, facility staff, home health staff, nursing aides. Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Define trauma.
  • Identify 3 different types of potential traumatic events (PTE).
  • List at least 4 common reactions to traumatic event(s) across domains.
  • Explain trauma-informed care (TIC) and the 6 key principles.
  • List at least 3 benefits of trauma-informed care (TIC) when working with older adults.
  • Identify 3 trauma-informed care (TIC) strategies.
