Promoting Understanding and Healing in Adoption and Foster Care

This course provides an opportunity to learn about the Seven Core Issues that impact the lives of birth family, foster family, adoptive family, and other constellation members. The Seven Core Issues are Loss, Rejection, Shame/Guilt, Grief, Identity, Intimacy, and Master and Control. The impact of trauma and attachment are discussed.

Target Audience

Foster Care and Child Welfare professionals and stakeholders. Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Foster Parents, Kinship Parents, and Caregivers

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will list the three key issues to consider in achieving permanency.
  • Participants will discuss the seven core issues of adoption and permanency and identify at least one their implications.
  • Participants will discuss how losses impact relationships of Constellation members.
  • Participants will discuss how to encourage steps to mastery in Constellation members.
  • Participants will list tools to help children gain mastery.
