Suicide Risk Module 2: Assessment, Treatment, and Postvention

This training advances or enhances the education of the audience through providing information regarding suicide assessment, treatment and postvention. The audience will gain skills regarding various assessment tools for suicide risk. Participants will also learn about treatment modalities, keeping both co-occurrence and integrated care in mind. Lastly, postvention will be discussed to assist participants with supporting survivors.

Target Audience

Unlicensed and licensed behavioral health professionals including, but not limited to, social workers, graduate-level counselors, therapists, and substance use professionals. Unlicensed and licensed health care professionals including, but not limited to, nurses.

Practice Level: Beginner and/or Intermediate.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least two examples of safe language when discussing suicide.
  • Discuss the relationship between co-occurring conditions and suicide risk.
  • Identify at least one benefit of integrated care.
  • List two tools that can be used to assess suicide risk. 
  • Apply knowledge of evidenced based treatment methods used to treat suicidal ideation to a case study.
  • Describe three components of effective postvention.
